Decent customer service

V&A publications pulled the stops out to help.

Glad my website’s back up and running again – all of our sites appear to have been down for days due to some server problem.

Anyway, I just wanted to offer V&A publications a pat on the back for their customer service. It was my birthday recently and the DH handed me a lovely present, which was clearly a book. And I tore off the paper and began to flick through it and slowly the awful truth began to dawn – I already had it.

This was a pretty big deal because not only was it a pricey book – over £25 – he’d bought it from Amazon, so a return would be at our expense, with France’s usual astronomic postal charges (the price of ordinary things in France can be beyond belief to a Brit).

I fessed up, though, and told him, and he was mightily crestfallen as it was my only present that day (he gave me my ‘real’ present of a new dressing gown a couple of months ago, and I’ve been wearing it ever since).

When I looked at the two books side by side, however, I realised it was a natural mistake – not only were the covers different, the books actually had different titles. So I wrote to V&A customer services and asked if there was anything they could do (I feel, for instance, that there should be a note to the effect that it’s a reprint on the cover, or in Amazon’s notes on the book).

V&A customer services got back to me within a few days and have offered me a new book when it’s published – Ballgowns – which is very good of them, and exactly what I would have hoped for.

The books that we confused are ‘Historical Fashion in Detail. The 17th and 18th Centuries’, which has become ‘Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century Fashion in Detail’. The newer edition is slightly swishier than the old one, with a nicer cover, and both are available on Amazon.
